Choosing
the right motorcycle camper...
So,
you finally decided to get that motorcycle camper you've
always wanted. Maybe you're tired of cramming that tent
and all the camping gear on your bike leaving little
room for anything else. You're probably tired of
crawling around on your hands an knees getting in and
out of a tent or you'd rather be relaxing instead of
spending your leisure time setting up camp. Whatever your
reasons for choosing a motorcycle camper you will soon
find yourself asking, "why did I ever wait this
long?" Choosing
a motorcycle camper can be rewarding but also a confusing and daunting task to say the
least, after all, it is an investment that you will
likely enjoy for many years to come. While searching for
your motorcycle camper there
are five key factors I've listed below I think you
should consider.
Weight
is probably the most important factor,
especially if you plan to tow your camper with a
motorcycle. Inevitably there will be optional equipment
and accessories you will be carrying with you which will
add to the total weight of the camper,
this should be taken into consideration.
In addition to obvious safety concerns, weight can
negatively affect the performance and fuel mileage of
your motorcycle. Check the gross vehicle
weight rating (GVWR) of your motorcycle and factor in the laden weight
along with the weight of the camper and all the
accessories you plan to pile in there. Remember, lighter
is better.
Set
up is another important thing to consider.
Will you be traveling two up all the time or will you be
traveling solo? Some motorcycle campers require
two people to set up and can be time consuming and confusing, while others can be quick and simple
even for a solo rider. How fast or simple the set up can be very
important when you arrive at your destination in the
rain. Some motorcycle campers have to be unfolded, then
after tent poles are set up, the tent is unrolled and
wrapped over the poles. Try setting one of these up in
wind or rain. Most motorcycle campers have set up videos on the
internet for you to review at your leisure and I think you should study these
while considering the points mentioned here. Youtube is a good place to start and you will find a set up
video for most all motorcycle camper trailers there,
just type in motorcycle tent trailer.

Construction,
or how well a motorcycle camper is put together, can also be
important. One thing to avoid here is a tent canopy that is simply draped over poles and snapped
around a base floor fastened with snaps. Snaps
eventually fail and also leave large gaps for insects
and other small pests to find their way into your
sleeping area. A snapped canopy is also vulnerable to high wind
or that unexpected summer
thunderstorm. Raised sleeping platforms that extend out away
from a trailer base often supported by an exterior pole have been known to collapse or be kicked
in by campground pranksters. Being dumped on the ground
unexpectedly in the middle of the night could ruin and
otherwise nice camping trip. A well designed motorcycle
camper will feature
a bed directly above the trailer base, a tent canopy that is sealed around the perimeter,
and will have a raised platform designed to keep you off the
ground. This can be very important when that unexpected
downpour occurs!
Quality
of construction or materials used should be looked at when
selecting a motorcycle camper. A fiberglass body, for
example, is
lightweight yet strong and easy to maintain, where as an
aluminum and plywood construction can be quite heavy and
will likely rot and submit to corrosion over time. Look for a
motorcycle camper that has a premium tent fabric that is light, durable, breathable, and one that
resists mold and mildew. Avoid a canvas based material
as they are heavy, wick moisture, and will harbor mold and
mildew. Some motorcycle camper manufacturers will use
cheaper materials to lower costs. However, cheap
materials are often heavier and a good indication of
this will be the weight of the camper.
And
last, but not least, color and price should be
considered. Color can not only represent an
individuals specific taste but can also relate to the
climate in which they expect to be camping in most often.
Motorcycle campers in the northern parts of the country,
for instance, would probably be better satisfied with a
dark colored tent fabric which will draw more
heat from the sun. Southern campers however, will want a
light colored tent fabric that will be cooler in the hot
summer months down south. Although not the most
important factor to consider but ultimately something
that may affect your decision is price. When looking at
the price of a motorcycle camper focus on all the
factors above. Obviously a motorcycle camper that is comprised of
the best materials and constructed to higher quality
standards will be priced slightly above that of a
cheaper low quality motorcycle camper. These motorcycle
campers are
lighter, better built, and tend to hold their value longer,
all of which result in higher resale values. Try finding a used
Lees-ure Lite for sale,
chances are it's already sold and at a price close to
that of a new one.
Whatever
your decision, I hope the points mentioned here will be
of some help to you. I realize these factors may raise
some concerns over a competitors light tent trailer, and could
result in some questions you may have about the Lees-ure
Lite. I hope you will contact me with those questions or
concerns as I would be glad to help you. All things
considered, I think you will find the Lees-ure Lite at
the top of your list and the most logical choice. After
all,
